The Year of the Phoenix

Today is June 21, 2015: The Summer Solstice.

We make resolutions to change in January, shortly after the Winter Solstice. Why? Because we like the idea that as winter slowly fades and the days grow longer, we sprout like dormant seeds and rise like flowers into the sunshine, new and fresh.

I am not a flower.

I think the Phoenix better symbolizes my journey. Like the mythical bird, I feel it's time to rise from the ashes and soar to new heights. What better time of year to take flight than the Summer Solstice. The longest day of sunshine in the Northern Hemisphere, and for those of us in Texas, just the opening to summer. Our hottest days lie ahead.

This is not a "New Year's Resolution." This is the beginning of something new. Savannah's passing marks the end of one way of life and the beginning of another.

The Year of the Phoenix starts today...
